Parents often ask me what the best age is to start music lessons. For me, the answer is age five. But for the kids too young for formal lessons, musical play is the best way to get them interested and excited about music. My three-year-old son, Simon, and I are always “playing” music: tinkering around on the piano together, strumming his toy guitar, and singing silly songs.
Take a listen to the original melody Simon created as he played with my recorder. I use my recorder to practice all my vocal exercises and to do at-home recordings of all my original music. But on this day, Simon and I had a little musical fun. (There’s a little gem hidden in the middle….)
